2.1 Summary

  • Over the last 10 years Government policy has shifted between the integration of PTWs in mainstream transport and a less prescriptive approach.
  • Good practice requires motorcycling to be an integral part of a Travel Plan.
  • Local Transport Plans should acknowledge the role that motorcycles play as a legitimate and beneficial mode of transport.  They should focus on the strengths of motorcycling and contain strategies to mitigate their weaknesses, including reducing the collision involvement rate. Such strategies should cover both engineering and non-engineering activities.
  • Consultation with riders, the industry and interest groups is essential to ensure that strategies and initiatives meet users’ needs.
  • Provision of secure parking facilities at transport interchanges and journey ends are essential to minimise the risks of theft and ‘unofficial’ parking. The public sector should set good examples in this area.
